Yaradua’s Lantern: The inventive Nigerian spirit

yaradua-lantern

I could not be more impressed when I first was someone selling this on the streets of Lagos, Nigeria. It is supposed to serve as the local version of a torch. Inquiring about this local invention made me remember the popular “Abacha stove”, which became popular during the tenure of Late General Sanni Abacha. But this is one of the indications that the true Nigerian spirit is a tough one. [Read the rest of this entry...]

Happy to be Back!

Phew!

That was all I could say, my last 2 weeks has been interesting.

First, I was part of the team that executed the first phase of telephone culture assessment for one of the leading banks in Nigeria. it was a mixture of phone calls and analytical work (something like interesting - boring). But it was fun running  customer service trainings on phone.

Then right in the midst of collating results, I went to OAU Ife to deliver a message on “the tests of Leadership ” and it was explosive. (I intend to post details) only to come back to meet my site down. this went on for a while till today. Then my even internet service provider went AWOL

But then, it’s great to be back!

Get this book out: the making of millionaire teachers

p style=text-align: justify;Last week, Visible Impacts - Project RAISE , the New Nigeria Club, The Future Movmement and Generis Solutions forged an alliance to stem the tide of academic failure in our secondary schools. The objective of this project is to inspire 1,000,000 secondary school leavers to excel in the forthcoming S.S.C.E exams and J.A.M.B and to sustain this number and more for the coming years. The current facts on ground are alarming - Out of the 1,188,142 that took S.S.C.E only 188,136 passed S.S.C.E with Credit in English and Maths and 3 other subjects. Out of the 1,145,961 present for J.A.M.B exam 548,543 candidates scored above 200. Where have those who have been failing? They are there selling on the streets, snatching bags, in cyber cafes outsmarting others, maybe also in the creeks doing stuff to the nation that never granted them a chance to succeed. The lifestyle of the Poor

economic-crises

The effect of the Global Economic Crises is closing in on Nigeria gradually. A recent report predicted that 18 percent of Nigerians would further be classified as being poor in 2009. That mean the gap between the poor and the rich will get wider still. But then, it is said that if the riches of the world were shared between the rich and the poor, in 30 years, those rich would still be rich and the poor would have returned to their normal position. Apparently, the poor and the rich seem to have habits that consistently make them remain in the same position. These habits would be analysed based on assets and liabilities. What is an asset? WAZOBIA FM: Who is your best presenter?

TGIF, guys. I’m looking forward to a highly engaging weekend. But then I have a couple of thoughts and process I’ve been engaging my heart in, but then, I’m yet to put into paper, I’ll definately post later.

There is no doubt that the poaching crises between Cool FM and Inspiration FM, where the rumoured deportation of Inspiration FM’s Dan Foster became news have helped Wazobia FM significantly.

The radio station has tipped significantly gathering a large mass of followers from the bus conductor and drivers to executive businessmen. I posted previously on wazobia, on wazobia FM na wah, click here

I was even surprised one day when I heard on radio, one business man who said, “My driver no dey listen, he don put me inside hold-up, help me break bottle for him head!”. I busted out laughing. No doubt, the ‘medicine’ of Lagos traffic has come to stay.

My main issue is to identify who is the best presenter on the station. It was a major issue of contention as I discussed among some friends last week. For me, it is Diplomatic OBJ!

More noticeably is the palpable anger with which Nigerians are giving up on the direction, in which the nation is going especially when in 4 months time; we would be hitting the 50th anniversary of our nation.

Ekiti people have proven once again they are the fountain of knowledge, (I jokingly call it - state of emergency). I see the dramatic events of those days being a message written to every other state, the electorates, contestants and particularly for the coming 2011 elections for which so many governors had previously abandoned governance to campaign for.

I would like to share lessons in form of messages, which the Ekiti re-run has taught us all.

Insights from Slum dog Millionaire

slum dog millionaireOne confession: after the euphoria of the Indian movie revolution in the early eighties, when we were kids; watching the “Shole”, “Shakti”, “MARD”, “Yer van dera”e.t.c. I lost the Indian movie appeal. American movies top my collection list now, forget those Nigerian movies- never a fan. Especially when I have a multimedia project to work on, I love a movie playing in the background, as a result of this, there’s hardly any series movie I’ve not watched.

The staggering accumulation of 6 Oscar awards by the film, Slum Dog Millionaire caught my attention. [Read the rest of this entry...]

Deola Kayode goes to Orange

orange academy

My week is going to be very interesting. I am in the final week after going through the war room 11 of Orange Academy’s School of Brand Advertising. It’s been four weeks of fun and work excitement. I am presently working on our final presentations for the final battle with the other mock advertising agency.
The school, though two years old, is one institution that has done a lot in stamping it’s presence into the heart of Brand and Advertising Industry in Nigeria. Bespectacled Kenny Badmus, [Read the rest of this entry...]

What do investors check before investing in your business?

42-16303011If you were to ask in a general business meeting, Church, mosque or in any gathering that how many people have ideas, you will be amazed with what you get to see as a response.

One of the things you quickly discover is that you are not the only one with great and sound ideas; neither are you the only one who needs funding. Most people will, rather than developing the idea into a plan and strategy, they jump out looking for funds to finance the business. They then begin to complain that people or banks are not interested in thelping businesses . I once watched a TV programme where people came with ideas for funding and you wonder how they got to the TV. It was obvious that God was doing them a favour by not giving them money for the business in the first place. Today will be dealing with what investors look for, what Banks, funding agencies, partners look out for in your business before committing their funds into your idea or business.
